3rd Workshop on Sports, Economics, and Natural Experiments

June 25 @ 1:00 pm - June 26 @ 3:00 pm

2026: 1pm Thursday 25 June – 3pm Friday 26 June

Stirling Business School, University of Stirling, Scotland

Main Topics of Interest: Sports markets, games and their contexts can provide ideal natural experiments for testing economic theories. We seek studies that analyse new natural experiments from sports, studies which compare the findings from natural experiments across multiple sports, types of contestants, country, culture, etc., as well as (quasi) replication studies of any kind.

Submission Deadline: Researchers interested in presenting at the workshop are invited to submit either a full working paper or an extended abstract (1-2 pages) by email to carl.singleton@stir.ac.uk before midnight on February 28th, 2026. We particularly welcome submissions from PhD students and early-career researchers. Authors will be informed of their acceptance within two weeks of the deadline.

Scientific Committee: Raphael Flepp (University of Zurich); Carl Singleton (University of Stirling)

Invited talk: Christian Deutscher (Professor of Sports Economics, University of Bielefeld)

Organisation and Dinner: The workshop is supported by the Scottish Economic Society. Founded in 1954 as the successor to the Scottish Society of Economists (established in 1897), SES serves as a professional body for economists from all backgrounds, striving to make a positive and informed contribution to economic and political debates, particularly within Scotland.

The event is also associated with the Center for Research in Sports Administration (CRSA) at the University of Zurich. The CRSA is a scientific network aimed at supporting and coordinating top-level research in sports management, sports economics, sports administration, and related areas.

To conclude the first day of the workshop, a dinner will be held in the evening for the organisers and presenters.
